MY BABY.. MY DARLING.. MY BELOVED <3
float along was the second to last album i listened to when going through their catalogue. i think i put it off because i knew i'd be really obsessive about it. i was right!
i love early gizz. they felt like a different band in a sense.. and FAFYL is like a little time capsule. to me it feels like a 60's compilation record you'd find for $5 crate digging. all the songs have that retro vibe to them in different ways, and they all come together to make a weird and very noisy collective. it ranges from heavy psych garage-rock to love ballads to pure brain melting psychedelia. the lo-fi recording also adds to the vintage vibe.
this album also has what might be my favorite gizz song - god is calling me back home <3 i've talked about it elsewhere here but. i really like god is calling me back home. it's the cherry on top of a beautiful record. or like.. a cherry hidden within it that no one really talks about so you get to discover it on accident by yourself.
i'm not breaking any ground by calling polygondwanaland a fantastic album but holy cow dude. this is their masterpiece.
i don't know what's actually happening lore-wise in this one. like.. i do.. but it kind of breaks my brain to connect it to anything else. and i also haven't really read anyone else's opinions on what's happening either so it's kind of the wild west conceptually for me. but this album feels like a collection of vignettes across one land to me. stories of overthrown tyrant kings, colonization, mythical powers, hero's journeys, all intersecting :) it's probably supposed to be one storyline but i like it better my way :)
so it has a center of this bonkers fantasy land storyline. but then sonically it's filled to the brim with complex melodies and polyrhythms and polymeter and layers of tracks and insane production and.....
AND THEN! this was gizz's first venture into bootlegging! this album is free. i love seeing all the weird one-off bootlegs people make. i kinda want them all. it took me a while to actually download the bootleg files to play around with and when i did i cried. the love put into this album and the bootlegging program and everything else this band does is just too much. i love you polygondwanaland mwah mwah mwah
flight b741 dropped at THE perfect time for me. like... to the hour. i was going to wait for the official release at midnight but it was already out on bandcamp (shoutout australians) so i decided to go ahead and put it on. i was sitting on my floor, laptop and notes open, taking a leap into making my silly ambitious career plans work. i was living alone for the first time and dealing with my dad being in the hospital. you'd think they wrote every song on this album for me lol
the themes of escape and shitty home life, taking risks, losing hope and perservering, living life to the fullest, etc etc... really hit home!!
a week after this album dropped i saw my first gizz show. i was supposed to go with my dad but couldn't.. so i ended up going with my best friend :) we got stranded at a super 8 motel at 2am in nowehereville when her car broke down on the way back. i slept in my sweaty ass beer stained show clothes on a gross bed. great fucking night unironically. my dad is fine that was just a fucked up few months.
this album always surprises me. i know it's like.. THE gizz album. i know it's very good. but i always kind of forget how good it is, then every once in a while i listen to it all the way through and it blows me away.
it's cool seeing them start to play with interconnected riffs throughout this album, which is the first real gizzverse record :) i also love hearing the am i in heaven riff in like half the songs. am i in heaven is one of the best songs ever. i love it dearly
this tracklist is crazy because every song is either a live staple/classic or a weird little deep cut that's one of the best hidden gems in their catalogue. shoutout empty i LOVE YOU EMPTYYY
fuck it i'm putting in one of the bootlegs. live in paris is everything to me. i thiiink it was one of the first bootlegs i listened to, if not THE first! it's really hard to get better than this. it starts with venusian 2 which is one of my favorites everrr. then the poly suite is top fucking tier. i miss poly suite so bad. this version of the castle in the air is a minute long but it's one of my favorite bootleg gizzard moments. i can't explain why but it just tickles my brain right.
then poly suite morphing into muddy water... then my second favorite version of hot water... bonkers fun billabong valley.. the live version of anoxia that made me finally like anoxia.. boogieman sam my BELOVED.. THEN THAT AM I IN HEAVEN CLOSER. i still hadn't heard float along yet so the head on/pill teases haunted me. that's part of what got me to listen to FAFYL finally because i couldn't get it out of my head. thank you live in paris '19.
